The Photo Collection of Dhimitër Vangjeli
Kolonja in southeast Albania Early 20th century
Dhimitër Kristo Vangjeli (1872-1957) was born and raised in the village of Prodan in the Kolonja region of southeast Albania. As a young man he worked in Greece and then returned to Kolonja to open a shop in Erseka. The sign on his little shop read “Sweetshop, Watchmaker, Photographer.” Vangjeli, who had learned the art of photography in Korça, proved to be one of the great photographers of southern Albania, where he was active in the first half of the twentieth century (ca. 1900-1945).
A heavy wooden ammunition box was recently discovered in the archives of the Erseka museum. For over sixty years no one had opened it, probably for fear of explosives. The police were called in, but the container instead revealed a treasure – the glass plates of the old photos of Dhimitër Vangjeli. Erseka and the Kolonja region can be truly proud of the discovery. An exhibition was held in Tirana and a photo album was produced in 2016, entitled Kolonja through the Photos of Dhimitër Vangjeli, in which some of Vangjeli’s finest works were made known to the public. Dhimitër Kristo Vangjeli (1872-1957) wurde im Dorf Prodan im südostalbanischen Kolonja-Gebiet geboren. Als junger Mann arbeitete er in Griechenland. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Kolonja eröffnete er in Erseka einen kleinen Laden, auf dessen Schild stand: „Süßwaren, Uhrenmacher, Fotograf“. Vangjeli, der das Handwerk des Fotografierens von einem Meister in Korça gelernt hatte, wurde mit der Zeit zu einem der großen Fotografen Südalbaniens. Tätig war er in Kolonja vonca. 1900 bis ca. 1945.Vor wenigen Jahren wurde im Archiv des Museums von Erseka eine schwere Munitionskiste entdeckt, die ca. sechzig Jahre, wohl aus Angst vor Sprengstoff, ungeöffnet war. Als die Polizei zur Öffnung bestellt wurde, entpuppte sie sich als Schatztruhe. In ihr befanden sich die Glasplatten der alten Fotos des Dhimitër Vangjeli. Erseka und Kolonja können auf die Entdeckung stolz sein. Bald darauf gab es eine Ausstellung in Tirana, und im Jahre 2016 wurde ein Fotoalbum mit dem Titel Kolonja through the Photos of Dhimitër Vangjeli mit einigen Meisterwerken des Fotografen herausgegeben. Eine kleine Auswahl dieser Fotos wird hier nun vorgestellt.

Kolonja në gjysmën e parë të shekullit të njëzetë
Dhimitër Kristo Vangjeli (1872-1957) lindi ne fshatin Prodan të Kolonjës. Në moshë të re jetoi për disa kohë në Greqi. Pasi u kthye në Shqipëri, hapi një dyqan të vogël në Ersekë, mbi portën e të cilit vendosi një tabelë ku shkruhej ‘Hëmbëlore, Orëndreqës e Fotograf.’ Zanatin e fotografisë e kishte mësuar në Korçë. U mor me fotografi gjatë gjysmës së parë të shekullit të njëzetë (rreth viteve 1900-1945) dhe u bë një ndër fotografët më të mëdhenj të Shqipërisë së Jugut.Kohët e fundit, në arkivin e muzeut të Ersekës u zbulua një arkë e rëndë municionesh, e bërë prej druri. Nga frika e eksplozivëve, askush nuk kishte guxuar ta hapte për më shumë se gjashtëdhjetë vjet. U thirr policia, por kur u hap, doli se mbante brenda një thesar – qindra negativë në pllaka xhami të fotografive të vjetra të Dhimitër Vangjelit. Erseka dhe Kolonja mund të krenohen me këtë zbulim të madh. Me to u hap një ekspozitë në Tiranë dhe në vitin 2016 u përgatit një album me titullin Kolonja përmes fotografisë së Dhimitër Vangjelit, i cili njohu publikun me kryeveprat e Vangjelit. Këtu prezantohen disa prej këtyre fotografive.
