Ottoman Costumes

A great universal exposition was held at Prater Park in Vienna (Austria-Hungary) from May to November 1873 that far surpassed all of its predecessors (London 1851, 1862 and Paris 1855, 1867) in size and splendour. Seven million visitors attended. As part of the presentation of the Ottoman Empire, to which Albania belonged in the nineteenth century, was a photography exhibition showing the costumes of the various peoples of the Empire. Photography was still a relatively new art at the time and the public was enthralled by the exotic images. The photo collection, including pictures from Albania and the Western Balkans, also appeared in book form as “Les Costumes populaires de la Turquie en 1873” (The Folk Costumes of Turkey in 1873), Constantinople 1873, a volume that has recently been digitised and made globally available by Harvard University Library. In this connection, we are grateful to the Library and, in particular, to András Riedlmayer of its Fine Arts Library for making possible this presentation of these 1873 photos of Albania and the Western Balkans.

Vom Mai bis November 1873 fand im Wiener Prater eine große Weltausstellung statt, die an Pracht und Größe alle ihre Vorgängerinnen (London 1851, 1862 und Paris 1855, 1867) bei Weitem übertraf. Es kamen über sieben Millionen Besucher aus aller Welt. Als Teil der Präsentation des Osmanischen Reiches, zu dem Albanien damals gehörte, bot man eine Fotoausstellung mit den verschiedensten Trachten des Reiches an, darunter einige Fotos aus Albanien und den angrenzenden Gebieten des Westbalkan. Die Kunst der Fotografie war noch verhältnismäßig neu, und das Publikum staunte über die exotischen Bilder. Die zur Weltausstellung gezeigte Fotosammlung wurde auch als Buch vorgestellt: „Les Costumes populaires de la Turquie en 1873“ (Die Volkstrachten der Türkei im Jahre 1873), Konstantinopel 1873, das vor kurzem von der Harvard University Library digitalisiert und der Weltöffentlichkeit zur Verfügung gestellt wurde. In diesem Zusammenhang sind wir der Harvard University Library und insbesondere András Riedlmayer der Fine Arts Library zu Dank verpflichtet, dass wir Teil dieser Sammlung hier vorstellen konnten.
Veshje popullore të Turqisë në vitin 1873

Nga maji deri në nëntor të vitit 1873, në parkun Prater të Vjenës (Austro-Hungari) u organizua një ekspozitë botërore e cila tejkaloi në madhësi dhe në shkëlqim të tëra ekspozitat e mëparshme (Londër 1851, 1862 dhe Paris 1855, 1867). Ekspozitën e vizituan mbi shtatë milionë njerëz. Në kuadër të prezantimit të Perandorisë Osmane, pjesë e së cilës ishte edhe Shqipëria, në Vjenë u paraqit një koleksion fotografish të veshjeve popullore të Perandorisë shumëkombëshe. Fotografia ishte ende një dukuri e re, dhe publiku u mahnit. Ky koleksion u botua gjithashtu si libër frëngjisht: “Les Costumes populaires de la Turquie en 1873” (Veshje popullore të Turqisë në vitin 1873), Stamboll 1873, vëllim ky i rrallë, i cili u dixhitalizua kohët e fundit nga Biblioteka e Universitetit të Harvardit. Lidhur me këtë dëshirojmë të falënderojmë Bibliotekën dhe në veçanti András Riedlmayer-in e Bibliotekës së Arteve të Bukura, që mundësuan prezantimin e fotografive të Ballkanit perëndimor nga viti 1873.
